Dr. Charrise Barron is a newly appointed Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Music at Brown University (effective July 1, 2020). She joined Brown’s faculty two years ago as a Presidential Diversity Postdoctoral Fellow in Religious Studies, Africana Studies, and the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA). Dr. Barron has taught and guest lectured at Harvard, Yale, Colorado College, and Brown University. She has even lectured at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York.
Dr. Barron holds a PhD from Harvard University in African and African American studies, with a secondary concentration in music (ethnomusicology). She also has a Master of Divinity summa cum laude from Yale Divinity School, and a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in Computer Science. Dr. Barron is currently writing a book on contemporary black gospel music.
